The Call and Response: Archive and Counterarchive exhibition is a partial exhibition of the larger exhibitions planned for August 2026 in Yogyakarta (Indonesia) and for September 2026 at Framer Framed (Amsterdam, the Netherlands).

Anchoring from Jay Afrisando’s archival research at KITLV and his field research in Indonesia for the Atelier KITLV-Framer Framed Artist in Residence 2025-2026, the exhibitions aim to showcase Dutch colonialism’s effects on disabled/diffabled people and disability/diffability perception in Indonesia before and after the independence, and their consequences for the disabled people and the architectural structures that the society believes towards the people and disability, including environmental access, education, and government policies.

Instead of merely presenting the archival findings, Jay Afrisando curated and produced a counterarchive in collaboration with disabled/difable communities in Yogyakarta—Ba(WA)yang Production and Teater Braille—and NGO SAPDA (Sentra Advokasi Perempuan, Difabel dan Anak/Centre for Advocacy of Women, Disabled and Children) to respond to his archival findings.

Thus, Call and Response: Archive and Counterarchive not only investigates the KITLV colonial archives but also “responds” to the “call” of KITLV and Framer Framed, the institutions governing the archives, in the form of the community’s own counterarchive.
