Poetry Not Poetry, Music Not Music is a series of audiovisual works of Jay Afrisando, Arief Wicaksono, and Bawien Panggalih. It explores music-poetry from the perspectives of Deaf, neurodivergent, and hearing. Focusing on sign language and neurodivergence, this work invites listeners to cross the conventional boundaries of music, poetry, and music-poetry, by making the hidden and underexplored aspects of poetry and music more visible and audible: rhythm, pattern, multiinterpretation, (literal) misinterpretation, nonverbal expression, and many things generally not considered poetry and music from Western and temporarily-non-disabled perspectives.
Arief Wicaksono (Arief) is profoundly Deaf, actively joining the Deaf Art Community since 2005. Arief is a member of the Bawayang Production community, collaborating at prominent events such as Pekan Budaya Difabel (Disabled Culture Week, 2020-now), Pameran Tuli seniman Jogja (Yogyakarta Deaf Artist Exhibition), Pusat Layanan ArtJog (ArtJog Service Center) 2022, and LoveArtjog 2023-2025.
Bawien Panggalih is a mom who enjoys singing openly every day. She has a day job at a small company in Denpasar. In addition, she is a “certified picky eater.”
