A blank black screen with captions narrating the monologue. The monologue is in Bahasa Indonesia. The English translation is as follows:

They said…. Education is the pathway to the future.

They said… schools are where the great generation was born.

But funny… (laughing) … funny…

Why are more and more youngsters losing their way?

(smiling bitterly)

Every day, children wake up before the sun does

Wearing uniforms.

Bringing heavy bags.

Going to school with hopes.

But what do they get?

Piles of things to remember.

Pressures for good grades.

And fears of failure.

Not learning to understand…

but to memorize.

Not taught to think…

but to obey.

Huh… huh… (then laugh)

In the classroom, those who are quiet are called stupid.

Those who question a lot are deemed annoying.

Those who get low grades are labeled lazy

Funny… Very funny…

The fact is, maybe they haven’t found the right way to learn.

This system focuses too much on grades.

Math grades.

Exam grades.

Grades on report cards.

And forgets…

humans have values inside of them.

(laugh bitterly)

Those who are brilliant in drawing… are deemed unimportant.

Those who are brilliant in speaking are told to be… “QUIET!”

Those who are creative… are seen as rebels.

(laugh bitterly)

Funny… very funny..

Well… Because schools only measure-- schools only measure who can answer questions.

Not who can understand life.

(walk slowly)

And see the teachers…

Some come not because they care.

But because they are tired.

Tired of the administrative burden.

Pressured by targets.

And the salary isn’t commensurate with their sacrifice.

How can education progress…

if the educated are left to struggle alone?

(hitting snare drum) Ridiculous… ridiculous!

Then the government introduces changes to the curriculum.

Change it again.

Change it again.

Chaaange it again.

As if education is only about changing the name of the system.

While the core problems have never been solved.

Many school buildings are in a dire situation.

Many students drop out of school.

Many areas still need more teachers.

Many students study only to finish school… not to understand.

(laugh bitterly)

Funny…funny… funny but sad the education in here

(sound getting higher)

We say education is important.

But the budget is directed to the wrong priority.

We say children are the future.

But their voice are not heard.

We want the golden generation…

But what have we created? Anxious generation.

Anxious about failing.

Anxious about not being accepted.

Anxious about being called stupid.

In the end…

Many children grow up not being themselves,

but being the system, being the robots moved by the system itself.

In the pre- and post-independence periods of Indonesia, the education systems provided by the Dutch colonial and Indonesian governments were and remain far from the noble purposes of literacy development and freedom of thought.

Between 1817 and 1942, the Dutch colonial government established schools to promote economic and social values that served colonial agendas. The early schools for people with disabilities in Indonesia were founded by Dutch missionaries as part of the Ethical Policy, which, in some ways, embeds a colonial perspective; this includes the superiority of oralism over sign language in schools for the Deaf, a legacy still present in some schools to this day. On the other hand, the education system developed by the Indonesian government has not advanced individuals’ freedom of agency. Meanwhile, some public Schools for Students with Special Needs (Sekolah Luar Biasa/SLB) have treated disabled students as less than the nondisabled ones, as they deliberately lower the education standard for SLB compared to the mainstream schools.

Yuda Wira Jaya’s monologue, Nilai yang Hilang (The Missing Value), addresses the missing value in the current Indonesian education system. The system, he argues, only makes children grow to serve what the government puts forward, rather than make them grow to be themselves. The monologue elucidates that an education system can either enable or disable people, departing from the notion that disability can emerge from an oppressive environment.
